HISTORY
The USA Friends of AHTT was founded in 2017 to provide support and encouragement for the AHTT. The AHTT opened the first sports center in Haiti where at-risk children could meet after school to play table tennis. At the sports center, the children were given a safe space, clean water, food to eat, and trained coaches to teach and mentor them. The AHTT has also worked since 1997 to bring tables, equipment and coaching to many schools in Haiti. School leagues have been formed. There is also an elite players league where children compete every Sunday for 5 months/year at the AHTT sports center. Coaches and umpires have been trained by the AHTT, and new jobs have been created.
The value of sports in developing physical and mental health, and promoting peace and economic development, cannot be overstated. “Sport can promote personal well-being and encourage social inclusion which may lead to larger economic participation. It can help educate, and empower individuals with social and life skills for a self-reliant and sustainable life.” (Sport and the Sustainable Development Goals”, published by the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP).
